Essay Contest Winner Takes Home a Really BIG Prize!

Lisa Munson, owner of Munson Performance Horses, had this to say about the recent essay contest that awarded 2 year-old Half Arabian/Half Saddlebred Chestnut Gelding, ABD Uptown Design to seventh-grader, Miss Lanee Bare:

"I contemplated the many choices I had in trying to market and sell this young, talented gelding and decided in the present-day economy, the best way to find him a deserving home was to search out a youth rider that currently doesn't own a horse, but would be appreciative and ambitious in setting goals and building a relationship with him. I also wanted the winner to be involved with 4-H or OHSET so they would have a support system in place to help them in his training. I decided on an essay contest with some simple rules and deadlines and when I got Lanee Bare's essay, I knew I had made the right choice. Congratulations to Lanee and her family! (And Blaze - of course!)"

Here is Lanee's winning essay:

Blaze and his new owner - Miss Bare

My name is Lanee Bare. I am 12 years old and in seventh grade at Baker Prairie Middle School. This is my second year in 4-H. One of my life long dreams has been to own a horse of my own. Since we have moved into a home with 5 acres and a barn I know my dream could become real with a little bit of determination and a lot of hard work.

Another one of my dreams is to become a Rodeo Princess because it is amazing how they can ride so fast and hold a flag in their hand all at the same time, also because they are amazing. Another one of my dreams is to maybe even open up a therapeutic riding clinic for disabled children. That way their dream to ride a horse could come true as well as my dream to see them so happy and free. If I won this horse my dream of owning a horse would be real and my other dreams could also come true. Since I'm a straight A student and might become a Rodeo Princess one day I could apply for a scholarship to a good college, in addition to everything else.

I would do all of the training. I would read lots of books on how to train a horse so that I would learn the proper techniques of training. I would also have my 4-H leader, my family, and my friends help me train the horse. If I did win Blaze the main things I would train him in would be showmanship, western pleasure riding, trail obstacles and gaming. I would train him in showmanship because I would want to go to fair and do amazing and go to the championship class. I would train him in western pleasure riding so I could ride him and because I am currently riding western. I would teach him the trail obstacles because he needs to know how to do them so that when I take him on a trail ride he is comfortable with any obstacles we may encounter.

I would train him to game because I would like to compete in rodeos and other gaming events also because I think it is a ton of fun and would be even more fun for both of us.

If I did win, I would spend every spare minute I had training him and giving him all the love and attention in the world so that he would never feel sad or lonely.

- Lanee Bare
